Balby Carr makes a change for Sport Relief!
Thursday 1st April 2010

It’s coming to that time of year again, where exam stress and pressure in school is mounting so Balby Carr decide to take some time out and do something to really make a difference.

It is our motto that to Dream and Believe will make you succeed and as always we took this ethos and turned dreams into reality. Our dream was to walk the equivalent distance of that from Balby Carr in Doncaster to Kenya…a total of 4,290 miles to raise money for Sport Relief!! To do this the pupils, staff and the surrounding community alike ditched their normal shoes and donned their walking boots and running shoes in pursuit of the challenge.

The event proved to be a huge success with us achieving our Africa challenge and raising £660 through money from sponsorship, sports uniform, a bargain bun sale and for the brave lads in the school a leg waxing by our students studying Hair and Beauty…and more sponsorship is still to come!!

In reality though, this money we have raised is going towards a project which helps people, both in the UK and Africa who really need help to even just survive and function on a day to day basis. The people that Sport Relief provides aid to is endless, and unfortunately continues to grow.

At Balby Carr we are proud knowing that we have raised enough money to buy for example 132 mosquito nets for families and children to sleep within in Africa to completely stop them from contracting the deadly HIV disease in a country which cannot afford medication and treatment. It only takes 1 net to break the cycle for a family, but it only takes 1 infected individual to start the spread again so a net is vital in helping slow this process.

A massive thank you and congratulations is needed for the Academy organising team (Adam Marsden, Jono Jones, Gemma Stead & Nikki Lukey) students, staff and community of Balby Carr….it was you that made the difference, a difference that will physically change the way that someone tomorrow will live their lives.

It takes people, like the pupils and staff from Balby Carr, to step out of the ordinary and do their little bit to put something back into an ever challenging world.

Change doesn’t happen over night, but change WILL happen…at Balby Carr we are proud in knowing that we have and will continue to make a difference.
