Goalball World Championship Bonanza!
Wednesday 30th June 2010

Pupils of year 9 fast track and sports diploma took the opportunity to learn the paralympic game of goalball at the EIS last week.

From the start of the day pupils didn’t know anything about the sport however by the end they had participated in a coaching session, played the game and watched international matches. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn a new sport and all the pupils took full advantage.

Goalball is played by male and female athletes. Athletes wear ‘blindfolds’ and have to roll the ball to the other goal opposite. It is up to the other side to save the ball while being blindfolded. There is a bell located in the ball to allow the athletes to listen and react to sound rather than sight. The game therefore needs to be in silence. The game consists of two halves of 10 minutes each. The governing body of Goalball is the International Blind Sport Federation (IBSA).

Later trialed by Miss Clark with her year 7,s it has certainly caught on and will be seen in P.E lessons more this year. Lets go Goalball crazy!!!!!!
