Golf Academy Represent Yorkshire in English Championships

Came Down Golf Club, Dorset

After successfully winning the South Yorkshire round of the English Schools Team Championships back in March at Hickleton, Balby Academy of Sport was selected to represent Yorkshire in the National Finals at Came Down Golf Club in Dorset. The team was Adam Atkinson, Alex Woodcock and Joseph King (pictured right). After a very successful practice round the previous day the team was confident of a good performance. There are three other schools making another appearance in the championship with Balby Academy of Sport from Yorkshire one of them.

However a two-hour delay following early morning mist forced the English Schools Team Championship to be cut to nine holes at Came Down. But it didn’t cause Balby Academy of Sport many problems as they finished equal 6th out of the 26 teams representing their counties from across the country. The students all played very well in trying misty conditions and with a bit more luck with their putters the result could have been far better. However the individual results, especially Adam Atkinson’s individual score of 21 points being the 3rd equal best score of the day, was a very pleasing footnote to the day. The other scores were very creditable under the trying conditions. This was a great experience playing in front of the English Golf Union officials, run as a tournament as all tour events with score tents, leader boards, event day programme and announcement onto the tee. This is an experience the students will never forget. Watch out next year as the boys still have one year left on the golf academy so we will be aiming for the top spot.
